Citizens Against Government Waste Names Sen. Elizabeth Warren April 2026 Porker of the Month

Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) its April 2026 Porker of the Month for wanting the IRS to file your taxes for you.

Sen. Warren wants to resurrect the Direct File program that would allow the IRS to prepare and file everyone’s taxes. But the Direct File system was eliminated in 2025 in part because it would cost between $64-$249 million annually and did not cover state taxes. It was also set up without statutory authority. The IRS has offered Free File since 2003 in a successful public-private partnership, yet Sen. Warren wants the government to completely control tax preparation.

CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “Sen. Warren’s push to dig up from the wasteful spending graveyard the duplicative and wasteful Direct File program shows her complete disregard for protecting taxpayers’ hard-earned money and private information. Only taxpayers know their personal financial situation and they should keep control over how their taxes are filed. Direct File would take that power away by making the IRS the preparer, biller, and enforcer of everyone’s taxes. Filing taxes is already difficult and stressful enough for American families and businesses. For trying to revive a wasteful tax preparation system that was riddled with conflicts of interest and rightfully eliminated, Sen. Elizabeth Warren is an easy choice for April 2026 Porker of the Month.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. For more than two decades, Porker of the Month is a dubious honor given to lawmakers and government officials who have shown a blatant disregard for the taxpayers.
